The Goal Setting Blueprint
Why is goal setting important? Because without goals you don't go anywhere! Whenever you see anything worthwhile being done anywhere, it's because someone is behind it with a passion, a belief and a goal! When it comes to your personal life and your business, goal setting can make the difference between mediocrity and excellence and accomplishment. Much is said about goal setting. But just how do you set and accomplish goals? Is there some goal setting formula or strategy that can be employed to increase your chances of success? Thankfully, YES! What follows is a blueprint for success in goal setting. The Goal Setting Blueprint STEP 1. Develop a DESIRE to achieve the goal. The desire must be intense. How do you intensify desire? Sit down and write out all the benefits and advantages of achieving your goal. Once the list goes between 50 and 100 your goal becomes unstoppable. STEP 2. WRITE your goal down. Once it goes into writing it becomes substantial and starts etching itself into your subconscious. STEP 3. IDENTIFY 1) the obstacles you will need to overcome, 2) the help you will need to acquire, e.g. knowledge, people, organizations. In each case write them out in a clear list and analyze them. STEP 4. DEADLINE your goal. Analyze where you are now in relation to the goal and then measure how long you will reasonably need to complete the goal. Then set the latest outside date. STEP 5. Take all the details of steps 3 and 4 and make a PLAN. List all the activities and prioritize them. Rewrite the list, optimize it, perfect it. STEP 6. Get a clear MENTAL PICTURE of the goal already accomplished. Make the mental image crystal clear, vivid in the mind's eye. Play that picture over and over in your mind. STEP 7. Back your plan with PERSISTENCE and resolve. Never, never, never give up even when you hit setbacks. Follow those steps religiously and you will be successful at goal setting. DANGER - You can read this and think, "That sounds interesting. I must try that sometime". Notice the title of this article - "Goal Setting: The Blueprint". What is a blueprint? It can refer to a negative used in photography for architectural plans, maps or mechanical drawings. It can also mean a detailed plan or program of action. SO - Take these 7 steps and rewrite them on a card or in a notebook for frequent reference. Keep them on your computer in a note on your desktop. Use the 7 steps as a BLUEPRINT. Keep checking your goal against the 7 steps frequently to measure your progress and keep yourself on track. Then and only then will this article make a difference to your personal and business life. Now the question is, what goal are you going to set today? What goal can you set for your business which is going to lift it to new levels? What goal setting are you going to implement in your personal life which is going to have a positive effect on you and your loved ones? Take some time now and THINK about it! Then? JUST DO IT! Does just the question stop you in your tracks? Have you been so caught up in the pace of our world that you've not even thought lately about whether or not your life is going in the right direction? Is that W-A-L-R-U-S? A few years back, I went to London, England. I needed to get a passport-like photo taken, but the machine I wanted to use was out of order. When I called the company who owned the machine, I asked where they had another location. I was told, "Walrus." "Walrus?" I confirmed. "Walrus," was the response. I should have asked for the spelling, but the person had said, "Walrus." I asked around, and no one knew where there was a "Walrus" until, that is, someone realized that "Walrus" was "Woolworth's." Apparently, the person I spoke with and I both thought we were saying the same thing ? but boy, were we not! Make Goals Specific Saying that you want to be rich isn't enough. However, when you say: "I want $12,000 two years from now", you have a specific target that you can break down into manageable goals. Housewife....Is That All You Are? Scenario: You have taken care of the house, the kids, your husband and everything in between for years. You get a sense of happiness and joy taking care of your family, although you get tired sometimes. You husband works hard to provide for the family, so you think that it's the least that you can do. There is nothing wrong with feeling this way at all. Here's where the problem comes in: He works and works and works keeping very long hours. You never see him. He is on business trips very often and his luxurious secretary just happens to accompany him on every trip. Well you've suggested that you can take the trips with him to keep him company sometimes. He insists that the kids need you at home, you agree, you stay at home, and the conversation is over. Well, he is still working long hours and you start to express to him that you miss him being at home with you and the kids. He explains to you that he works to provide for you and the kids and that you are starting to nag him. You start to feel guilty and you stop what he calls nagging, because you don't want to upset him. Right? You are just happy to have a husband that provides for you and your wonderful kids. The Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Goals Human beings are goal-seeking creatures. We are impatient and try, and fall, and try again until we learn to walk. We babble and coo and struggle until we learn to talk. Skinned knees mean nothing in the quest to ride a bicycle. Recently, the world has watched Olympic athletes over-come incredible obstacles in the quest for a medal. When a client tells me they have had a goal, but in the past 6 months they have made little or no progress towards achieving it, I encourage them to ask themselves the following 10 questions: Creativity Management ? Short Term Goal Setting Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation. The Guide To Keeping New Years Resolutions The New Year is quickly creeping up on us. Do you have a New Year's Resolution? Well, if you're like most Americans (88 percent in 2001 according to a General Nutrition Centers poll), you have at least one resolution. And, if you are like the majority of these promise-makers, your resolution is probably related to health and fitness. In 2001 (according to GNC), 55 percent promised to eat healthier, 50 percent resolved to exercise more, and 38 percent wanted to lose weight. Where has All the Time Gone? We live in a busy society. I've been waking up after 4 or 5 hours, tossing and turning for the rest of the night. I have tried to think peaceful thoughts and hoped that I would go back to sleep quickly, but instead I found myself trying to solve numerous problems in my life. Applying Action To Your Inner Desires! "I know what I need to do, but I'm scared that I won't succeed." Who among us hasn't been stuck in this scenario before? We know what to do, but we don't put knowledge into action. The end result is the frustration of staying stuck in the current reality even though change is desired. Goal Setting for Creative Professionals You know that old saying -- if you don't know where you're going, any path will get you there. That's what happens if you don't take the time to figure out what your goals are and WRITE them down. There's power in writing things down (and if you're a writer, you already know this). Getting To The Top By Fits And Starts I would venture to believe that most people have the qualities to make them a success. Then why are not more of them successful? One observation is; by not following through on actions that they started with. They have victory in sight and then do you want to know what they do? For the major rest of readers here is a brief summary. Your Goals Are Unique We have just begun another new year in our lives. It is time to regroup and rethink our goals and desires. Our goals may be partially dictated by outer circumstances. These are cases where we need more money for food, repairs to the home or automobile, medication, winter clothing, heat and so forth. These goals are established by necessity. Writing Your Personal Vision/Mission Statement I recently spent some time revising my personal vision/mission statement for my coaching practice. While doing this, it occurred to me that the vision I have for my work is closely related to my personal vision. Having a job that reflects my personal vision is powerful because it has allowed me to create a business life for myself that truly reflects who I am.
